A man was outside his home on a Saturday night in Chicago when he was approached by three of his neighbors.

Andres Salgado is the man’s cousin. He said, “The people that live next door, there’s been a problem with that house lately.”

The situation got violent, and the three men attacked him. The man suffered blunt force trauma to the head and body, and after the incident he went to the hospital in critical condition.

The man drew his weapon1 and fired at least seven times: A 29-year-old was shot five times, a 22-year-old was shot once in the chest, and a 55-year-old was shot once in the neck.

The three aggressors were also sent to the hospital in critical condition. In a world of three-on-one, the gun brought parity.

I don’t see anything about murder charges being filed against the three aggressors, which makes me hopeful that the man recovered.

We don’t know much more than this, unfortunately. Salgado says his cousin is “a hard-working man. He's always with his kids, taking them to baseball, baseball practice, everything, you know, like his wife is a teacher. Very respectful family.”

He also said, “He doesn’t deserve this.” I hope each party gets the things they deserve — though of course I sometimes pray, “Lord, please don’t give me what I deserve,” and that could apply to the bad guys in this case as well. Repentance and redemption is also on the table.

Meanwhile, when people say you don’t need a “large-capacity” magazine, remember this story: Seven rounds stopped three people. What if it had been four people? What if he had missed a few times? Is ten rounds really so many?

And then there’s Smoke Tales....

A lot of people apparently knew and loved Bryan W. Gambill from Fort Dodge, Iowa. On the Fort Dodge PD’s Facebook post, for example, one woman wrote, “My son’s first soccer coach. My son loved this guy.”

Something went wrong.

Shortly after 5 AM one morning, a homeowner faced the 44-year-old as he was breaking into his garage. The homeowner shot Gambill and called 911.

Gambill was pronounced dead at the scene. The Webster County Attorney’s Office ruled the shooting self-defense and declined to file charges.

This sounds like a tragedy. But the tragedy started before Gambill entered the garage, and the homeowner’s role in it was reasonable. He wasn’t the bad guy: He just defended his home.

This was tagged in the calendar as a 2024 incident, but it took place in 2023. I apologize for the error.

The Fort Dodge PD posted to Facebook and included images of their original report and an update that identified Gambill as the man who died. I’m including both of those here.

Gambill’s obituary has more comments on it than a typical criminal’s does. That’s not dispositive, but I found it suggestive of the fact that he had been a good man, but had gone wrong in his life. The comments on the FDPD’s Facebook post have a similar tone.

We Are Iowa 5 carried the initial story and provided an update in August when the Webster County Attorney’s Office found that the homeowner had acted in self-defense.

The Messenger posted initial coverage and another article when Gambill was identified.

The timeline on this is confusing, with multiple conflicting reports, so I’m not going to give exact times. One thing to note is that the video is generally dark, so this appears to have occurred mostly in the nighttime.

An Uber driver was sitting in her car at a strip mall on Lee Boulevard when she felt three knocks on her window. She turned around.

“The only thing I saw was a handgun and an assault-style1 rifle. He told me to get out of the car, and I got out,” she said. “I thought he was going to kill me.” She ran to the nearest storefront — a Papa John’s — and called the police.

That was, I think, the second of four carjackings that night.

Earlier, Ja’Darian Graham had tried and failed to take a vehicle on Joel Boulevard. He fired at the car as it drove away.

Then came the Uber driver.

Third was a car that he was able to steal, but unable to drive — it had a stick shift. (Note to self on car preferences.) He abandoned it and continued on foot.

Then he carjacked a fourth vehicle at a Lehigh Discount Liquors.

Finally, he drove the stolen car to his cousin’s house, got out, and started firing from the front yard.

The cousin’s girlfriend bolted from the back of the home as Graham forced his way in, still shooting. One of his rounds hit his cousin in the elbow2 — at which point the cousin shot him.

Graham didn’t make it.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno described the end of that scene this way: “The homeowner returns fire, thankfully, and kills our suspect. This person [Graham] is on a tear. And that’s unacceptable. So thank God for our homeowner, he’s a hero.”

He also confirmed that Graham had no prior criminal history.

The Uber driver, still shaken, told reporters that even with Graham dead, she remained afraid.

They had an additional video on the topic that you can see below, also very good.

WINK provided initial coverage and the interview with the Uber driver. I always appreciate it when news sources humanize the violence of the situation, which can otherwise feel like “this subject was shot by that subject” — anonymous, clinical, unemotional. This woman was terrified for her life.

The News-Press put their story behind a paywall that I chose not to break.

Sean Holt covered the story at USACarry, and AmmoLand also had a blog post about the incident.

This story seems pretty typical at first glance, but I found something that casts it into a weird light.

Let’s start with what all the news sources say:

At 2:48 PM in northwest Reno, NV, a man found himself in an altercation on Comstock Drive that led him to shoot his attacker, who later died in a local hospital.

The shooter stayed put and cooperated fully with Reno police.

After investigation, the robbery/homicide unit deemed the act self-defense, clearing the shooter of charges.

As stories go, the details are thin, but the result seems clear: It’s a self-defense shooting, a defensive gun use. As I often say, the Good Guy with a Gun isn’t a myth — he’s just under-documented.

But there’s also an article in the Yeshiva World News, describing a report from B’Chadrei Chareidim, that sheds additional light on the story. These are both mainstream news outlets for ultra-Orthodox Jews: The former is English-language in the US, and the latter is Hebrew-language in Israel.

They name the aggressor as an Israeli Jew named Yeshayahu Dayan1, and say that he had invited a homeless man to live in his own house. There were — as one might expect! — some issues with that arrangement, and Dayan asked the homeless man to leave. The homeless man refused, the two got into a fight, and the homeless man shot Dayan.

If the Yeshiva World News account is accurate, a man was shot in his own home (or on his own property) by a homeless man that he had invited in, and the shooting was in self-defense.

Crikey.

I have to agree with the commenter who said, “People have to understand that many of the homeless are people that have mental and emotional issues and as much as you’d like to help them you can’t place your family in danger just to help them.”

I also have to have some faith in the police, who investigated and said that the homeless person shot the resident in self-defense. However things might have gotten out of control, it sounds like Dayan didn’t handle it in a way that led to a good result.

Dayan’s family subsequently arranged for the body to be repatriated to Israel for the funeral rites.

Our story starts with a 53-year-old woman who was in her car (might have been a pickup truck) in a Walmart parking lot around 3:30 in the morning.

No, we don’t know why she was sitting at Walmart at that hour, because she wasn’t an employee, but... Walmart.

While she was sitting in her vehicle, two armed men, aged 19 and 21, approached her and demanded her property. She drew her gun and fired; they drew and fired back.

She didn’t emerge unscathed, but her injuries were non-life-threatening.

Better still, the men fled — and then were the subject of a manhunt that included a K-9 unit, drones, and a helicopter. Two hours later, they were in custody. Both were arrested and booked for robbery and assault at Maleng Regional Justice Center.

A brave woman held her own long enough for the K-9, the drones, and the helicopter to do the rest.

Hell’s Bells! What was he thinking?

Austin Sumpter was a 23-year-old from Thrall. “Thrall” means “servant” or “slave,” of course, and it turns out that “Sumpter” is Old English for “pack animal.”

This Beast of Burden carried a knife; on its sheath were the words “Hail Satan.” He tried to force his way into a house. The homeowner, having no Sympathy for the Devil and no fiddle to bargain with, called 911.

Unfortunately, Sumpter broke in before the police reached them.

Fortunately, the homeowner had a gun and shot Sumpter the Satanist in the hip. (He’s lucky that bullet didn’t put him on the Highway to Hell.) Law enforcement arrived to find Sumpter lying on the porch.

He was charged with burglary of a habitation with commission of a felony. And I imagine the Pack Animal from Servant thought it was really cool to have “Hail Satan” on his knife. Which makes me really enjoy his absolutely pathetic mug shot.

No charges were brought against the homeowner.

Noah was apparently well-liked in the neighborhood where he and his girlfriend shared an apartment with her two kids.

Neighbors told Fox 40 things like, “Everybody loved Noah. He was a good guy. He took care of all these kids in the neighborhood more than the parents did half the time,” and “We called him Neighborhood Watch, because he’s out here, he takes care of the kids, the kids love the guy. We all loved the guy.”

But things weren’t perfect between him and his girlfriend — she kicked him out about two weeks prior to the incident I’m about to describe.

He arrived at his now-ex’s apartment at around 1:30 AM on a Sunday morning. Maybe he was up late from Saturday night, which carries its own potential explanatory power. Unfortunately, we have no information about potential intoxication or Noah’s state of mind beyond his actions.

He pounded on the door for 20-25 minutes. Finally, his ex-girlfriend opened the door — the neighbors say she “let him in,” while the police say that he forced his way in.

From there, he entered her bedroom, where her new boyfriend was in bed.

Did Noah know the new boyfriend was going to be there? Unclear, but Noah attacked the man and started choking him.

The new beau grabbed a gun from under his pillow and shot Noah once, then immediately called 911.

Noah died at the scene.

The gun was fully legal — no, they still haven’t fully extirpated gun ownership in California — as was the shooting.

In a summary so concise that I’m shamelessly stealing it for this post’s tagline, Sergeant Amar Gandhi from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said, “New boyfriend had a gun, registered to him, legally obtained, legally owned, everything else, and actually shot the ex-boyfriend.”

Local attorney Michael Wise told CBS News, “If this gentleman was presented with a lethal threat that he did not trigger in any way, then he's entitled to defend himself and kill that intruder.”

I appreciate CBS’s further commentary from Mr. Wise, since it educates people about situations beyond the scope of this precise incident:

Gandhi said the gun that was used was legal and registered to the man who pulled the trigger, but even if it had not been, Wise said it still would have been justified.

“Ironically you can still be charged for illegal possession of a firearm if you’re not allowed to possess one, but the actual use of deadly force to defend yourself is still justified even if you use a weapon that is not registered in California or if you’re not allowed to possess one,” Wise said.

But, again, illegal possession wasn’t an issue here. Nor were the neighbors’ nice words about Noah. In fact, the neighbors who were so complimentary about Noah also corroborated the story that the police tell.

One neighbor, clearly implying that Noah had not been violent because he was let into the home, said that Noah had been pounding on the door for 25 minutes and that “they opened the door for him.” She asked, “Why didn’t she call the police?” But neither the fact that they didn’t call police nor that she let him is relevant to the self-defense discussion.

This is something Sergeant Gandhi knows well. He told Fox 40, “And he may very well have been a good guy; we’ve got to look at the facts of the case as it was presented to us, with the evidence that we’re able to prove.”

The DA declined to press charges.

The next time you have a really annoying morning, remember how much worse it can get. To wit: A man’s car broke down on I-65. He left it there temporarily, picked up his wife’s car, and came back to deal with it. Yep, really annoying.

The incident

Then he saw a man he didn’t know — later identified as 45-year-old Jason Calhoun — standing behind his vehicle.

Calhoun demanded the car. The victim told him no, and warned him that he was armed. That probably wasn’t the right move: The victim’s gun was tucked between the driver’s seat and the center console, and Calhoun opened the door and tried to grab it.

The victim got there first.

So Calhoun kicked him, leaving “obvious footprints” on the victim’s clothing from Calhoun’s boots. Then he grabbed the victim’s eye, hooking his finger into the left eye socket. “Give me your eyeball,” he growled.

That must have hurt bloody hell, but the victim somehow kept his cool, his eyeball, and his gun.

Calhoun got him in a headlock and started choking him, and the victim fired multiple shots at him.

The victim jumped out of the car.

Calhoun, wounded, finally got what he wanted — the car — so he climbed into the driver’s seat and reversed... into a semi truck. He drove away and eventually went rolling into a ditch. (The police didn’t make an immediate connection between him and the carjacking victim, which I attribute to the distance between them.)

The Good Samaritan

Nicholas Fiedeldey was pulling out of his driveway onto Outer Loop on a rainy Thursday morning, heading to work. He saw a car coming toward him in the wrong direction. He slowed down. The car rolled into a ditch.

He pulled over.

“I asked him if he was doing okay,” Fiedeldey recalled. “Like, ‘Hey man, you doing all right?’ I got no response. Another pedestrian came up, and I went up to talk to her because she was seeing if we were okay. That’s when we both heard him say he was shot. So I immediately took my shirt off, ran over to him and started applying pressure.”

Fiedeldey couldn’t have known that the man he was helping had just attempted to remove another man’s eyeball. The Hyundai Calhoun was sitting in was the victim’s stolen car. The gunshot wound Fiedeldey was treating came from the victim’s gun.

He found out the next day. It didn’t change how he felt about stopping — and good for him. He acted on what little information he had.

“I just went in and tried to help him out,” he said. “It wasn’t like a huge shock or anything. Just instincts, I guess.”

The aftermath

Calhoun spent six days in the hospital before appearing in court. He was charged with attempted murder, strangulation, and robbery. A judge set his bond at $250,000 — with home incarceration if posted — and assigned him a public defender.

The victim had visible injuries to his face and a corneal abrasion on his left eye. He was taken to the hospital and released.

It’s worth noting that the victim’s warning — “I have a gun” — didn’t stop Calhoun. If anything, it gave him an advantage and took away the victim’s advantage of surprise. Announcing you’re armed isn’t the same as being ready to use your gun.

I also want to praise Nicholas Fiedeldey, shown below, who stopped his car, took off his shirt, and applied pressure to a stranger’s gunshot wound on a rainy Thursday morning on his way to work. He’s not the Good Guy with a Gun in this story, but the world needs good guys like him, too.

WAVE 3 did solid work here across four articles. The initial report was somewhat confused because the police at first didn’t know that the car in the ditch was related to the victim: It was “a fight,” not an attempted carjacking. (This is true of other sources as well.) There were also reports of the arrest and Calhoun’s first court appearance. Finally, they have the interview with Good Samaritan Nicholas Fiedeldey, of which I see no analogue in other reporting.

We don’t talk about officer-involved shootings much around these parts, because we’re focused on the judicious application of gun violence by ordinary citizens. This is an exception, though — because a valid concealed carry permit holder may have saved a police officer’s life.

Officer Jason McDonough from Farrell, Pennsylvania1 observed Michael Biro in his car in front of Luxx convenience store concealing a gun. McDonough asked Biro if he had a permit. Biro didn’t produce one, so McDonough ordered him to surrender his weapon. Biro refused.

Biro then pulled his weapon and fired on the officer, who drew and returned fire, but stumbled and fell. Biro got out of his car and came after him.

Malik Mataria, the store owner, saw what was happening.

“He had a valid concealed-carry permit, he had a gun,” Mercer County District Attorney Peter C. Acker said. “He went to where the police officer was and fired on the suspect.” Acker also said that Mataria “apparently [saved] the life of the police officer.”

On the ground, Biro still refused to relinquish the gun. “He had a weapon on his chest. It was believed to still be loaded. He refused multiple commands to push it away,” Acker said.

The Critical Incident Team was called in. All told, more than 40 shots were fired by the three men, and the police officer fired a dozen beanbag rounds, before they subdued Biro.

Biro was flown to the hospital with life-threatening wounds.

That was all on May 24. By June 7, the DA had cleared McDonough and Mataria. Acker said, “I will not be filing any charges against either of them and as to them, my investigation is closed.” Biro was still in the hospital, condition unclear.

A bystander with a gun served and protected that day.

Ryan Ameer Shah, 39, lured his 37-year-old ex-wife into her friend’s apartment parking garage at 2525 South Voss Road in Houston by texting her a picture of her vandalized car.

When she investigated, he appeared and started beating her, at which point, fearing for her life, she shot him.

Shah, who had a previous conviction for assault, was charged with assault on a family member.

The woman, having armed herself and chosen not to be a victim, was not seriously injured.

One of the people who summarized stories for the calendar has a particular sense of humor. Since there’s not much more to the story than what he wrote, I’m going to go against my better judgment and let him tell it.

Robexy Figueroa, a 44-year-old from Wyoming, entered Wichita’s Beijing Massage around 3:30 PM and attempted to rob the place at gunpoint.

However, Figueroa rubbed a 71-year-old employee the wrong way, and he wasn’t having it. The employee pulled his own gun, and they exchanged fire, both taking multiple hits. Figueroa died of his wounds while the 71-year-old went to the hospital to get patched up.

There’s a bad joke or two I’d like to make here, but for my editor’s sake we’ll just say — the employee exhibited skilled hands with a firearm to defeat the bad guy.

Local news

There was a lot of coverage here, but it was essentially uniform. Nice work to most of the sites updating their web pages to make sure the full incident was detailed everywhere it was covered.

KWCH 12 gave the incident 95 seconds of TV coverage, which you can find embedded at the link. They did a good job of summarizing what information they could get on the website, and they included the full two-and-a-half-minute video of Wichita PD updating the community on two incidents. This incident starts at 1:28.

KAKE covered the incident at least twice. First, they gave the story about 90 seconds of coverage; when the story needed updating, they updated the article in place, which I appreciate. They gave it additional coverage as information was released, with two minutes of airtime. The added coverage also got a little bit of community reaction, which — similar as it always seems to sound — I appreciate as well.

KSN.com gave the initial incident 35 seconds of airtime and brief but effective coverage; as details were released, they posted a new article and included the same Wichita PD update as KWCH, but edited it to contain only the part pertaining to this story.

Hays Post, KNSS Talk Radio 1330 AM / 98.7 FM, KFDI 101.3, and the Wichita Eagle (original + follow-up) also covered the incident, all of them following the police reports.

When we wrote this incident up for the calendar, we missed an important detail.

I don’t feel that bad, mind you — most of the news organizations that covered it did, too.

The calendar correctly said that Kissimmee deputies responded to a call for a burglary in progress: David Martinez-Estrada, 28, had illegally entered a home. When deputies arrived, he was still in the home, and he refused to come out for them.

But it helps to understand the dynamic when you know that the woman was the mother of Martinez-Estrada’s child. That’s the part we missed. He refused to come out until he “was able to see his baby.” (We don’t know how old the “baby” was.)

So Martinez-Estrada had broken into his ex’s home, refused to leave, and penetrated deeper into the home, finally forcing his way into the bedroom where his ex was. “With her family,” reports say — so it may be that he saw his baby after all.

It wasn’t a long visit, though: Deputies heard three shots, and before long Martinez-Estrada stumbled out of the home.

They took him to the ICU.

When he got out, he was charged with criminal mischief with damage over $200 but less than $1,000, unarmed burglary of a dwelling, following/harassing/cyberstalking another person, and resisting arrest without violence.

Based on everything I can see, the ex faced no charges.

Kudos to WESH 2 for picking up on the relationship between the “burglar” and the woman in the home. Redwood City

It was nearly 11 PM Saturday when a couple was checking out at a Safeway in Redwood City’s Sequoia Station shopping center. Without any apparent provocation, a man approached them and stabbed the male shopper in the abdomen, leaving additional wounds consistent with a sustained knife attack.

The woman used her shopping cart to push the attacker back and protect the male victim. The male victim, bleeding from the stab wound, produced a gun and fired once. The shot missed — hitting a checkout monitor instead — but it was enough to make the attacker flee to the parking lot, where witnesses pointed him out to officers and he was detained without further incident.

The victim survived. The attacker, Isidro Zamora-Cisneros, 31, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, along with methamphetamine possession and related charges. He was held without bail.

On May 13, the State Attorney’s Office ruled that a man who killed Joseph Starkey in December of 2025 was justified and that no charges would be filed against him.

The road rage encounter on St. Johns Bluff Road turned fatal when Joe Starkey, driving home with his wife, got out of his vehicle to confront another driver.

The other driver remained in his vehicle and warned Starkey he had a gun and that Starkey should not approach. Starkey kept coming — and, according to both a witness and the shooter, he reached his hands through the driver’s window.

The driver fired.

He then called 911 immediately afterward. Starkey, described by the community as a local musician, died at the scene. The announcement closes the case.

A 41-year-old Anderson man had been staying at a home north of town — the Riall family was putting him up. However, the man later told police that the family had been abusive toward him, and whatever goodwill there might have been between them definitely disappeared the night of May 9.

Shortly after 11:30 PM, a physical dispute broke out between the man and two others: Koty Riall, 37, and his father Rodney, 58. According to witnesses, the victim ended up on his back with Koty on top of him. He pulled a knife and stabbed Koty. When Rodney then came at him, the man shot him.

Both Rialls died at the scene. The 41-year-old was arrested but faced no charges — the prosecutor found credible evidence of self-defense and declined to proceed.

Around 1 PM on Monday, May 11, Tyson Brown opened fire on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts — eventually letting loose at least 60 rounds on the busy street. Drivers were trapped as Brown advanced.

A Marine veteran with a concealed carry permit wasn’t having it. Moving car to car, he pulled trapped drivers to safety — including Rachael Saveriano, who said he opened her door and told her to run. She did, and looked back to see the veteran exchanging fire with Brown.

A Massachusetts state trooper also engaged Brown. Two men were seriously wounded in the incident. Brown, 46, was taken into custody. He had previously been convicted of armed assault with intent to murder a police officer in 2020.

The linked news article doesn’t give much detail, so I’m going to let Valerie Beasley Ennis tell her side of the story. This is a Facebook comment from a person with a deep interest in the story, so treat it carefully — but without it, the news article doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Ennis was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon intending to kill (c.f. the City of Dunn PD Facebook post). Because it wasn’t Steven Ennis’s home, North Carolina’s Castle Doctrine didn’t apply.

East Shelby Drive looks like pretty much any other place in Memphis. It’s right off of Interstate 55, just a short hop from the Memphis airport.

But it felt pretty different for one man on a hoverboard.

He was in the area at about 9:00 on a Monday night, minding his own business, when a black Dodge Charger pulled in front of him and blocked his path. A young man climbed out of the car and demanded his hoverboard at gunpoint.

But this hoverboarder was no Marty McFly. He pulled his own firearm, and they exchanged gunfire. Both of them took multiple hits. (You have a moral right to defend yourself — and in some states, they don’t infringe on that right through abusive laws — but in doing so, you might get hurt. Think before you draw.)

The aggressor, 18-year-old Marcellous Cathey, got back into his Charger and drove to Methodist South Hospital, about two miles away. With a gunshot wound, people ask questions. He told detectives that he was on East Shelby Drive when he pulled over to check on a bumpy tire — and someone shot him. He also told them it was exactly the timeframe of the attempted robbery.

The victim was taken to Regional One Hospital, about ten miles away, but he was later able to identify Cathey as the man who tried to rob him.

A case of he said / he said? I’m not sure what made the victim credible to police, but three weeks later they arrested Cathey and charged him with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

Yet another bad guy repelled by an armed innocent. Doc Brown could not be reached for comment.

Just a show of force can be enough to send a bad guy running.

In this case, the bad guy is Sean Aring, 41. His record doesn’t strike me as a bad bad guy’s, but he’s clearly a bit of a miscreant. He has a record going back to at least 2000, mostly misdemeanors — in fact, among a few other things, he was charged with misdemeanor driving on a suspended license in 2000, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 (twice), 2013, and 2014.

Not only misdemeanors, though. Somewhere along the way, he got a felony drug conviction. I can’t find where — it’s not in his record at the Nashville / Davidson County Criminal Court Clerk’s website — but I know it has to be somewhere, as I’ll explain.

On a Saturday evening in May, Sean Aring was walking his dog past Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

There were volunteers out directing traffic for the evening Mass. Aring started yelling obscenities at them and then, while still in the roadway, pulled a gun from his holster and fired a shot in their general direction, but into the ground.

Imagine being those volunteers for a minute. Obscenity at the church is out of line — and then a gunshot? What the actual…?

One show of force deserves another: A prepared church volunteer drew his own gun and fired back, also into the ground. That sent Aring running.

He didn’t outrun the cell phone photo that was taken of him, though. He was identified — not hard, since he had been seen often enough in that area already — and arrested.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one of which was dismissed, one of which earned him three years; one count of reckless endangerment, which was dismissed; and one count of felon in possession of a firearm, which earned him five years. The two sentences were to run concurrently.

I’ve got to talk to my priest about this. If I get five Hail Marys for one sin and ten Hail Marys for another, I could just say ten and call it good, right?

Right?

Anyway, his felon in possession of a firearm charge leads us to the fact that his record as detailed above must be missing information about a felony in another jurisdiction — but even though I don’t have it, the prosecutors clearly did.

And it also leads us to the fact that felons don’t pay attention to the laws that prohibit them from keeping and bearing arms, or firing them into the pavement at presumably peaceful churchgoers.

Color me shocked.

WSMV 4 carried an initial story before Aring was identified, including the cell phone photo that probably helped identify him, as well as a follow-up once he was identified.

A 16-year-old forcefully entered a home toting a gun at around 7:30 PM in Savannah, Georgia.

The police said that “shots were fired” — we don’t know who started it, whether both people fired shots, or how many shots were fired.

We know the homeowner faced a man-sized threat that invaded his house with a firearm, and did what makes sense. And we know the boy ran away wounded. The police found him in “a protective sweep of residences in the immediate area,” and he died despite efforts to save him.

Martin Thiongo lived in the same apartment complex as a man for whom he apparently lacked fondness.

He forced his way into that man’s abode. He allegedly said that he planned to kill his intended quarry.

Alas! for Martin Thiongo — as he gave pursuit into the man’s bedchamber, his would-be victim retrieved a firearm and shot Thiongo in the haunch. And thus our drama ends, with the hunted free and the hunter in the snare of the law.

I do wonder about the charge: Our source says both:

Thiongo allegedly said he’d planned to kill the man in the apartment.

and:

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Thiongo with first-degree burglary.

How is that not attempted murder? I suppose the allegation of the utterance was just hearsay. Not for me to say, and there’s no follow-up to see what the disposition of this case was. Maybe it was the most provable charge rather than the most severe.

A burglar broke into a house at about 4:30 AM in Dallas.

A resident shot him and sent him running — or hobbling, or something — back to his car. He was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery the same morning.

The occupants were all unharmed.

Another home invasion, another home protected by a good guy with a gun. And that’s about all we know.

Joshua D. Robertson doesn’t think laws apply to him. And who can blame him? He was running free after being arrested over and over and over again.

By age 22, he was already a convicted felon. We know this because he was arrested in October 2013 as part of a homicide investigation (emphasis added):

Joshua Donnell Robertson, 22, of Mallard Street in Morgan City, was arrested Oct. 30 on a warrant for aggravated assault with a firearm, resisting an officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

But that’s not all.

• Driving without a license, July 2014.

• Possession of Lortab with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm in the presence of narcotics, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a stolen firearm, transactions involving drug proceeds, violation of a drug free zone and resisting an officer by refusing to be booked, August 2014.

• Distribution of crack, March 2015.

• 57 in a 30, DWI (first offense, refusal), November 2020.

• Stop sign violation, resisting an officer by flight, obstruction of justice (tampering with evidence), possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana, December 2022.

• And finally, two counts of attempted second-degree murder and charges of aggravated criminal damage to property, illegal use of dangerous instrumentalities, aggravated assault with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, simple battery, flight from an officer, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, May 2024.1

But I’m getting ahead of myself, because that’s today’s story.

Robertson was 32 by that time.

He was on the street outside a house when he and a man started to argue. The man was with a small child at the time.

Robertson struck the man and then got a gun from his car. (Felon in possession of a gun for at least the third time — but sure, more gun laws will help.)

The victim retrieved his own gun as he retreated toward the house with the child. When Robertson fired on them, the victim returned fire. At least one bullet struck Robertson’s car.

Robertson drove away. Someone had called 911, so police were on their way. They tried to stop him, but had to give chase before catching and arresting him.

Both the man and the child were uninjured.

Nobody connected the dots on Robertson’s criminal past. I won’t repeat the links from above, but they were all from the archives of St. Mary Now.

Chase Kinchen had a paper trail related to a woman who was his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his very young child. For convenience, I’ll call her E.R.

• November 2023: E.R. took out a protection order against him, claiming that Kinchen grabbed her face, pulled her hair, and said “I swear to God I’m going to strangle you”. She also claimed that he sent her threatening texts.

• Four days later, Kinchen violated that protection order and received a 30-day sentence — suspended.

• February 2024: Kinchen pleaded guilty to domestic abuse and disorderly conduct for the original case and received a 10-day sentence — suspended.

• May 8, 2024: E.R. took out another protection order, claiming that Kinchen was angry that she had hired someone to lay flooring in her house. (Kinchen owned a lawn service business, but not a flooring business.) She claimed he started “throwing elbows” at her and got into running car with a child inside — not his child, but a son that she had with someone else — “and started to take off.”

So it is that by May 14, he was prohibited from getting within 500 feet of E.R.’s home or contacting her.

Then Kinchen texted a friend that he was going to “slaughter” E.R. He had a beard; he shaved it. He got a black face mask and dressed himself in black. He got hammered — his BAC was 0.23. And he got a gun and walked to her house.

He forced his way inside. E.R. and a guest were there.

Kinchen threatened the two with his gun, and then fired it at the guest, who fled to the garage. Kinchen pursued, but the guest1 grabbed a pistol from a vehicle and shot him in the arm and the chest.

Kinchen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Casting a critical eye

I’m pretty careful in my research for these stories and there’s a lot of evidence that Kinchen looked like an ordinary guy. He played hockey. He played a lot of poker, with lifetime winnings in the low five figures. He loved dogs. He loved his daughter. He had some low-level run-ins with police, but they’re things like traffic violations and one case of being a public nuisance.

And it’s really easy to find commentary from Kinchen’s sister claiming that he was “murdered” and that E.R. set him up, including hacking into his social media accounts. [EDIT, May 29, 2026: His sister has found this post, and she has added over a dozen comments to tell her side of the story.]

I take that stuff seriously, even though many families of many criminals have a hard time believing that their loved ones committed heinous acts. There have been examples of fraud like that before.

But the trail isn’t hard to follow here. There was the incident itself on May 14, 2024. There was police commentary shortly afterward, saying it looked like self-defense. And there was a damning report by the State’s Attorney’s Office in November 2024 that detailed the lengths Kinchen went through that fatal night.

So let’s follow the trail, avoiding those parts with “he said, she said” potential.

• An order of protection following an incident to which he pled guilty.

• An immediate violation of the order of protection.

• The “slaughter” text on the night he was killed.

• Shaved beard, black mask, black clothes, gun — and that 0.23 BAC.

We — or I, at least, you do you — have to conclude that Kinchen brought this on himself. Orders of protection couldn’t stop him, but a guy with a gun did.

There’s a surprising amount of material on this case. Much of it is about the same; however, Perry Groten from KELO (a.k.a. “Keloland”) did some really important work pulling together the background from court papers. The rest are easy to place into two categories.

Initial reports. Most of these were from the time of the shooting — the news coming out was already calling it self-defense — to one outlier at the end of May.
