Defensive Gun Use weekly roundup
Featuring fifteen stories that made the news in the past week or so.
Welcome to another weekly round-up. Is your state in the list? Three from Florida, four from Texas — that’s almost half the list!
Note that we’re only providing one link per story. There may be many more, or only this one that we can find.
And remember that everyone is innocent until proved guilty — and sometimes, what looks like self-defense turns out not to be.
Alabama
Mobile
At Brother’s Food Mart on Sunday morning Tyler Hodges was standing in the parking lot with several other people when an older model GMC pickup pulled into the parking lot. The driver, Keyon Jamel Tate, and Hodges got into an argument.
Hodges walked to his own vehicle, pulled out a machete, and came back toward the truck, waving it at the truck’s occupants.
Tate shot Hodges multiple times, then fled.
Deputies arrived around 2 PM and found Hodges, 39, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Witnesses backed up the store’s surveillance footage — and added backstory: there had been an ongoing dispute between the two men, and two weeks earlier, Hodges had used that same machete on Tate, injuring him.
Tate later gave a statement to detectives. The case went to the DA for review.
Florida
Fort Pierce
A woman with a prior relationship to a Fort Pierce homeowner apparently decided Sunday morning that windows are just doors you haven’t tried yet. She was in the process of climbing through a window of his home on South 31st Street when a man who knew the homeowner shot her.
The homeowner had already called 911 to report that she was attempting to get into the house when the other man shot her.
She was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound and is listed in stable condition. As of this writing, no charges have been filed, and the shooting remains under investigation.
Miami Gardens
A man arranged to meet a 17-year-old in Miami Gardens around 6:30 PM Sunday to sell a watch. Standard enough transaction — until the teen pulled out a gun and tried to rob the seller instead.
The seller pushed the teen away and shot him once, hitting him in the hand.
The seller was uninjured. The teen was airlifted to a hospital in stable condition. As of Monday, he remained hospitalized, but police said charges are pending for when he gets out.
