It’s been a while since since we published a DGU roundup — I had a lot of work to do getting my database up to snuff and getting the 2027 Calendar ready to publish. (Speaking of which, it’s available to order.)
The news has been overwhelmed (and rightfully so) by the Bend, Washington elementary school shooting, but don’t forget all of the other DGUs out there.
Information in this listing is preliminary. Everyone is innocent until proved guilty, and many of these investigations are ongoing. We’re giving you the best telling of the story we can — but there may be things we don’t or can’t know, including conflicts or omissions in the reporting. We try to make reasonable inferences and hedge appropriately.

Tuscaloosa: October 10
Two men tried to rob a 25-year-old Tuscaloosa man in the Magnolia Apartments parking lot Saturday evening.
Shots were exchanged.
Police got the call around 7:30 PM about a shooting victim headed to the hospital. The 25-year-old wasn’t identified, and no charges against him were announced.
Robber Kurtae’vious Earl Tyson, 20, was critically wounded and later died. His partner, Deronte Collins, 20, was charged with felony murder, first-degree robbery, attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
Alabama allows felony murder charges even when the person charged didn’t fire the fatal shot. Collins is held without bond and hasn’t entered a plea.
Both men were from Oxford, which is about 90 minutes away.

Around 3 AM, a woman came home and found a man asleep on her lawn. Her 72-year-old father went out to send him on his way.
The man woke up drunk and agitated. He attacked the father and forced him to the ground, leaving visible injuries. When the daughter stepped in, he knocked her down. One account has him throwing her into a neighbor’s car.
The father pulled his gun and fired once, hitting the man in the midsection.
The daughter’s boyfriend, an off-duty officer, arrived and handcuffed the wounded man. Responding officers found him that way.
He was David Gonzalez, 32, an off-duty ICE agent from Texas. Police don’t know why he was in the neighborhood. A neighbor called him “belligerently drunk.”
Gonzalez was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Prosecutors charged him with assault, battery, elder abuse, and vandalism. The homeowner wasn’t charged. Police said the shooting was self-defense.

Joshua Greenhill's evening with a female friend ended with deputies at his home around 9:30 PM for a domestic disturbance. She left with a family member, and so did the deputies.
She wanted her car back, though. Two male friends drove her to the house and dropped her at the corner. They stayed in their car and waited.
Greenhill walked up to the car wearing brass knuckles and hit one of the men in the face several times. That man pulled a gun and fired twice, hitting Greenhill.
Just after midnight, the man called the sheriff's office to report the shooting. Deputies found Greenhill in the road. He died at the scene.
The man Greenhill hit went to the hospital with facial injuries and was released later. Investigators think alcohol played a part. The sheriff's office said it looks like self-defense. No charges were reported.

A man was at his apartment with his child Wednesday evening when a white Nissan Rogue drove past. Inside were his child’s mother and her boyfriend, Colin Matthews.
The man left. Later, he ran into the Rogue again.

Officers soon arrested Matthews and the woman without incident. Their infant had been in the Rogue, and a bullet defect was in the door frame near the baby’s seat. The gun was in the infant’s diaper bag.
Both first claimed they’d been chased and shot at, then recanted. Matthews admitted he fired first.
Matthews, 25, faces assault, firearm and child abuse charges.

Just before 1 PM Thursday, a 16-year-old with a pump-action shotgun fired several times at a Toyota Tacoma in the Silver Rail Elementary parking lot. The driver called 911. The truck’s rear window shattered.
Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two girls at the school, was driving on his lunch break when he heard the shots. He saw the teen shoot at the locked doors to force his way in.
Giamanco followed him inside and shot him. Officers arrived at 1:02 PM and learned within seconds that the shooter was down.
The teen had already killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and taken to the hospital. Federal sources said Giamanco held a concealed carry permit and prevented more deaths.
Giamanco was unhurt. Gov. Tina Kotek and President Trump praised him. The shooter, John J. Griffin, died inside the school. His mother bought the shotgun. No motive has been released.

Jose Cruz Escobar, 25, had a job interview in Richland on the evening of October 12. His mother was driving, and his sister was coming along rather than stay home with their half-brother, Alejandro Salazar, 27.
Salazar had been treated that day for a mental health crisis and sedated after turning aggressive. As the family got ready to leave, he grabbed a rock and threatened to smash the car.
Back inside, he argued with Cruz Escobar over a butane tank and punched him. Cruz Escobar ran to his bedroom and got a gun. Salazar threw the rock and broke the gun’s red dot sight.
In the driveway, Salazar charged. Cruz Escobar fired warning shots into the ground, then once more, aiming low, he said. The shot hit Salazar’s abdomen. He died at the scene.
Deputies arrested Cruz Escobar on suspicion of second-degree murder, citing evidence and his early lies. Three days later, prosecutors said he likely acted in self-defense and released him. A charging decision is pending.
