Good Guy with a Gun #13: Todd County, KY
Original incident: November 12, 2023
This is the kind of content featured in the 2026 Good Guy with a Gun one-page-per-day desk calendar.
Sometimes you have to read between the lines a little bit.
Allegre, Kentucky, is a very small, unincorporated community in Todd County. This is the town center:
If you zoom out, it keeps looking like that for some distance. The nearest hospital, Jennie Stuart, is a half-hour west, in Hopkinsville. Nashville is an hour and a half south-southeast. If you love country living, it looks like bliss.
It’s not always blissful, though. On November 12, 2023, three generations of Segers — Charles, 75, Christopher, 51, and Clayton, 18 — showed up on Paul Vangotum’s property near Pilot Rock Road. (Vangotum was 47, almost exactly the average of the Segers’s ages. Go figure.) Apparently there was a dispute over an easement, though we don’t know specifics.
Words turned physical. The Segers assaulted Vangotum, doing enough damage to send him to the hospital later.
But Vangotum pulled a gun and fired, striking all three. (Good aim under pressure!)
Two of the Segers got life-flighted to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, and the other one was driven to Jennie Stuart, as was Vangotum. Everyone was released with non-life-threatening injuries.
Ultimately, a bunch of organizations got in on the incident: The Kentucky State Police were assisted on scene by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, Todd County Sheriff’s Office, Todd County EMS, and PHI Air Ambulance. (I get the others, but Fish and Wildlife? I’m sure there’s a reason…)
Police arrested the Segers on charges that included trespassing, fourth-degree assault, terroristic threatening, and first-degree wanton endangerment.
Notably, there’s no mention of Vangotum, the shooter, facing charges of any kind: And that’s how we know it’s a real Good Guy with a Gun story.
Sources
This story got about as much coverage as I could expect, much of it from news organizations that are very small. Let’s give a shout-out to the local teams:
WEKT Radio is apparently a local news outlet, AM/FM and web, that basically serves Todd County; they delivered solid coverage, and they were the only source to show the mug shots of the Segers as well as a few other photos.
WCLU Radio is similar, but serving Barren County.
WBKO 13 is the most mainstream of the sites, being affiliated with ABC, and they did a fine job as well.
That thing that never happens, happens every day.

Fish and Wildlife were probably the nearest authorities of any sort . . . :)
