It’s difficult to imagine a greater threat than a man who has lost his humanity.

For several days, the family had watched their 28-year-old relative — who had moved in from Haiti two months earlier — deteriorate. He was in a mental health crisis that had gone on long enough that they called 911. Deputies came. He wasn’t there.

That evening he came back. He was standing naked next to a fire in the neighbor's backyard.

His sister-in-law went out to talk to him. She was holding her three-year-old daughter. She didn’t suspect malice. She just needed to coax him back to the trailer.

The three of them started to walk. He pulled mother and daughter into a hug.

Then the hug tightened — around her neck, around her head, making it hard to breathe. She pushed him away.

So he grabbed her daughter and ran into the woods.

She screamed.
