Good Guy with a Gun #172: Old East Dallas, TX
Arrests didn't stop him. Prison didn't stop him. A PI with a gun gave it a shot. (Heh.) | Original incident: April 21, 2024
These posts are based on our Good Guy with a Gun calendar. Today’s post is essentially the same as the calendar version.
Before our story begins, 29-year-old Kaland Spencer was already a convicted felon with a history of violence: assault with deadly weapons, fighting, family violence, and evading arrest.

It’s not surprising, then, that a private investigator was trying to take him into custody1 for outstanding warrants against him. This time they were for assault on a security guard and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
But instead of complying with the PI’s demands, Spencer doubled down, and that’s when things got messy. He stole a bystander’s car to escape, at which point the PI shot him.
Spencer was taken to a local hospital — and, after all that, arrested for his warrants.

It’s possible that this is also a set of his mug shots (archive), and if so, this is his Facebook page — the tattoos are clear, he uses one of the mugshot images in a post, and this page hasn’t been updated since March of 2024. You can walk through his mug shots and charges going back to 2014.2
There’s some information about him at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice website: Note that this doesn’t cover the incident we’re discussing here.
Local news
There’s not much more to say than is in the police report — but there’s a little more, and Irving Weekly said it: They gave information about his prior arrests and noted that he was a convicted felon.
Audacy (formerly Radio.com) covered the story via NewsRadio 1080 AM KRLD.
MyTexasDaily.com covered it as well.
The calendar entry says, “…a private investigator was trying to execute outstanding warrants against him.” That’s apparently not technically accurate; however, in Texas, licensed private investigators are permitted to make arrests in certain circumstances, and that’s what the DPD say this PI was doing.
The last one is from May 21st, 2024, a month after this incident; he probably had to get out of the hospital before being arrested and charged.
