Good Guy with a Gun #180: Memphis, TN
“I’m gonna make your mother cry,” he said. But momma’s boy could shoot. (How well? That’s secondary.) | Original incident: April 24, 2024
These posts are based on our Good Guy with a Gun calendar. Today’s post is essentially the same as the calendar version.
It’s a spring night in Memphis. The hours are getting later — it’s a little after midnight — and you’re hanging out on your driveway with your girl. Pleasant enough.
Someone you know comes up. You talk, and talk turns into an argument. Suddenly the man says, “I’m gonna make your mother cry,” and starts shooting at both of you.
You’ve just experienced Davian Walker. We assume his beef was with the man and not his mother, but it was near-deadly either way: One of his bullets struck home in his victim’s leg.
Fortunately, the victim was able to draw his own weapon and open fire. And I mean really open fire: Police later noted that his handgun “had its slide locked to the rear as it had been fired until empty.”
We can’t credit him with good aim — he apparently didn’t hit anything. But he made Walker go away, which was good, because the victim’s gunshot wound in the right upper thigh was very serious. He was taken to the hospital and initially listed in critical condition, but his condition stabilized.
Walker was charged with two counts of aggravated assault. There’s no sign that the victim was charged at all.

There are two main write-ups here with TV coverage as well, both reasonably good.
Fox 13’s Valerie Calhoun cracks me up: I’ve never heard an anchor call a criminal “low down” before. The 30 seconds of coverage is decent, if not amazing.
WREG’s Jessica Knox is less funny, but she spends a minute and a half delivering a lot more information.
Aggregator Hoodline also covered the incident.
