Good Guy with a Gun #216: Chicago, IL
I sure wouldn't be walking in Chicago at 3:30 AM. But if you must, a CCL helps. | Original incident: June 1, 2024
These posts are based on our Good Guy with a Gun calendar. Today’s post is essentially the same as the calendar version.
I know what you’re thinking: Didn’t we just have two stories about Chicago a few days ago? Yes, we sure did — but Chicago is so rich with violence that the only thing I’m surprised about is the fact that enough people jump through Chicago’s hoops to avoid being victimized by the criminals around them.
What’s even better? This is a story about someone with a Concealed Carry License — and it mattered.1
So picture it: It’s 3:30 AM, and you’re walking to your car on Spaulding Avenue in the Irving Park section of Chicago.
Okay, I’m sorry, I can’t picture it. I don’t want to be in Chicago. And I sure as hell wouldn’t be walking to my car at 3:30 AM.
But let’s pretend that there’s an alternate universe in which that could happen. A black sedan pulls up and three people pile out, demanding that you give them your car. What do you do?
Well, you’d have more options if you’re prepared — with a Concealed Carry License (CCL) and a handgun. And in this case, the people in the sedan targeted a well-prepared man indeed. Rather than comply, he fired on the men, who got back in the sedan in a hurry and drove away.
No word on whether the men were eventually captured. Probably not, unfortunately. But the CCL holder, at least, was safe.

Sean Holt covered the story for USACarry.
Local news covered the previous stories by breathlessly talking about how a Concealed Carry License holder — that rare beast! — used a firearm to stop a crime on their own property. Now, you and I know that a CCL doesn’t matter when you’re in your own house, but I think people highlight it because it shows that this strange person wasn’t automatically a criminal. These incidents seem to be real Gorillas in the Mist moments for Chicago press.
