I'm so glad he seems to have recovered, but how hard for the whole family. Still, better alive with medical bills than the alternative.

Some would argue that he could be alive with no medical bills if he had just given up his car. But that's his call in the moment, not ours to second-guess.

True, but then he'd be out a car, probably permanently, and that's pretty costly as well . . . There are some situations where a person really has obviously acted foolishly, but most of these in-the-moment situations are not ones to judge.

Right. As you know, I'm not trying to say "he made a bad call," because if I thought that then I wouldn't have published the story. I'm heading off the Monday-morning quarterbacking that many people would insist upon.
