Buckhead is apparently a nice place: Multiple neighborhood reactions to this shootout, and one reporter, say how unexpected it is as a setting for the incident.
It starts with a man in the yellow hoodie who didn’t belong there, and Michael Humes clocking him before anything happened.
It was a hot Thursday around lunchtime and Humes was in Buckhead visiting a friend. “I seen a strange guy, ya know just outta place,” he told Channel 2. “You got on a yellow hoodie, black shades, and a COVID mask.”
Moments later that same man had a gun in a mail carrier’s stomach.
She’d been working the loading dock behind a row of businesses at a condo building across from the Atlanta Fish Market, delivering a package, and what he wanted were the keys to her truck and her mailbox. The building’s cameras caught her handing them over.
Then she turned to Humes.
“She just started like crying she froze up and she’s like ‘Oh my God,’ and she turns to me and she says help me.”
He tried talking first.
“The guy turns around to me and I said, ‘Yo bro, you can’t do this right here.’ And his exact words were, ‘F-that, I’m trying to eat. Mind your business or I’m gonna kill you.’”
Humes was armed. He drew.
Both men fired, but it’s unclear who shot first. At sentencing, prosecutors said the robber ducked behind a parked car and fired into the air before he ran off; Humes remembers a round going into a wall. The carrier got clear while they were shooting. Nobody was hit.
Ricardo Williams, who lives nearby, heard it as a few shots, a pause, then a string of them; he’d taken it at first for a dumpster being dropped. The condos went into lockdown. Axa Rodrigues came out to find a bullet hole in her car, having meant to leave at 12:30 with her disabled mother and been running late.
Humes wasn’t sure what the police were going to make of him. Then they watched the video.
“They was like – you did an honorable thing. I approve of everything you did here – he shook my hand – and I was like damn.”
Humes told Channel 2 he hoped somebody would do the same for his own family, and that it had him thinking about mentoring young men.
The man in the yellow hoodie was Maximo Fitzhugh, and the FBI had him eighteen days later. Four months before any of this, he’d called an Atlanta women’s clinic and told the staff to get out because he was going to “shoot the whole place up” — they locked the doors and waited for the FBI and the police.
He pleaded guilty in the fall of 2025 to that threat and to discharging a firearm during a crime of violence during this incident, and this past April a federal judge gave him ten and a half years, with five more of supervision on the far end.
Fitzhugh, said U.S. Attorney Theodore Hertzberg, “brazenly robbed a mail carrier and instigated a lunch-hour shootout in one of Atlanta’s most active business districts.”
If he started the incident to get food, he’s now in a place where he can get free meals for a while.

FOX 5 gave a lot of great detail, like the time of the 911 call, what was demanded, the condo owners’ statement. They followed up when Fitzhugh was sentenced.

Henri Hollis’s piece is short but the most careful of the day-of coverage: it’s the one that says out loud which details came from the residents’ letter and which police confirmed afterward, and which of them came off the security video.
