A woman showed up in a neighbor’s yard, hurt, looking for help. Before he could do much of anything, a man came after her and tried to drag her away.

The neighbor grabbed his gun, pointed it at the man, and told him to let her go. It worked. The man ran.

The story she told police once things settled down was already worse than what he’d just watched. She said she’d been tied up and beaten since late Saturday night by a man she’d been dating — the better part of a day before she finally broke loose. Police described her injuries as bruising and lacerations “throughout most of her body and face,” including “possible broken bones,” and she was taken to the hospital.

There were two kids in the house too, 9 and 11, found down in the basement. Officers turned them over to relatives, unharmed.

The man was gone by the time police showed up, and stayed gone for about a day — until a tip put him back on the same block Monday evening. Officers picked him up there without a fight.

His name was Deondre Mohead. He was 36.

Nineteen months later, on March 11, 2026, a jury convicted Mohead of kidnapping, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, and torture. On May 28, a judge gave him 39 to 60 years — a pretty happy ending to a horrifying story.

Albion’s public safety department thanked its officers and its prosecutors, and closed with a line about “the courageous victim whose collective efforts resulted in the successful conviction of Mohead” — the kind of sentence a department only gets to write when a case actually closes clean.

Whatever the neighbor thought this looked like in his yard on a Sunday afternoon, it was worse. Fortunately, the neighbor had a gun, and he only had to point it to stop the abuse.
