Three ATM technicians were servicing a machine at Bank of America when three men in hoodies rolled up in a car. They said they had a gun and wanted the machine opened.
One of the technicians didn’t wait to see if they were bluffing about the gun. He drew his own gun and fired.
Nobody got hit, but it scared the robbers off. Two of the men ran on foot, and one peeled off in the car. It sounds like the two runners made it to a nearby neighborhood, though maybe not together: The man in the car came back to grab one of them, and they escaped again — but the last man was caught nearby.
Law enforcement didn’t recover a gun from the man they apprehended, and the men didn’t get a dollar out of the machine.
I don’t see evidence that the other two were ever caught, though that may be lack of coverage rather than lack of progress by law enforcement. The FBI took over the investigation, since robbing a bank is by default a federal case; they’re insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which is a federal agency. (Similarly for Credit Unions, by the way, though they’re insured through a different federal agency.)
