Good Guy with a Gun #3: Port Richey, FL
Original incident: October 27, 2023
This is the kind of content featured in the 2026 Good Guy with a Gun one-page-per-day desk calendar.
Port Richey, Florida, is a small city of about 3,000 residents on the Gulf Coast, not far from Tampa. Country music legend Johnny Cash once owned a home there along the Pithlachascotee River. (No, I can’t pronounce that, either.)
Around 2 PM on Friday, October 27, 2023, three people targeted a Port Richey home in “a nice little retirement-type neighborhood” -- the words of one of the residents -- and tried to force their way in.
It didn’t go well for them. The person inside the home opened fire, killing one would-be intruder and injuring another, who was taken to the hospital and then arrested. The third was found by police after a brief search.
The resident was unharmed.
As is so often the case in these situations, the reporters offer updates if any come, but there doesn’t appear to be any future coverage.
I like the Fox13 coverage the most: It has all the same details in the text, but the accompanying video also gives the reactions of the neighbors, who seem truly surprised that this would happen in their neighborhood. 10 Tampa Bay’s coverage was more brief, but serviceable. Tampa Bay 28 ABC’s coverage was bare-bones.
That thing that never happens, happens every day.
