I want to say "what was he thinking?" but of course he wasn't really _thinking_ at all. He _wanted_ the guy to think his gun was real so he shouldn't have been surprised when he did. (I think all the "he"s are clear enough to eschew editing at this hour.)
I've seen a lot of cases where a fake gun was used by the aggressor as if it were a real gun, and then people are surprised when someone treats it like a real gun.
One was in a parking lot. The aggressor's family was there, and they were devastated, of course -- but what the actual ____ was the aggressor thinking when he escalated from a non-violent situation by pulling a realistic-looking BB gun? Tragedy caused by hubris and a strong dose of stupidity.
