It was the dogs that woke Christina.
That was just before midnight. She, her husband, and their three young kids were at home. “We were already asleep. I started hearing our dogs barking,” she said. “So I woke up my husband, I’m like, hey, something is going on.”
They looked out the window and saw a man on their property, acting erratically. He’d already torn down part of their wooden fence, and he was going back and forth between the backyard and the driveway.

Christina called 911. Her husband got his gun.
“He came to our driveway and with a plank, a wooden plank from our fence, he broke our daughter’s bedroom window,” she said.
Her husband screamed at him to go away. He didn’t.
“Instead of him leaving, he came and tried to open the door, our kitchen door. So that’s when my husband had to fire his gun.”
Her husband hit him twice. Police were there minutes later.
That man was 35-year-old Jeremy Black. He went to the hospital, and by Wednesday morning he’d been booked on suspicion of burglary of a habitation. The family didn’t know why he’d been at their house. From the police department’s public information officer:
“This guy is lucky to be alive. The homeowner did what any of us would have done. We’d wanna protect our family.”
Christina was more conflicted. “We’ve never experienced something like this, so it feels bad that we had to do this to protect ourselves,” she told NBC 5. “But we feel good in a way also because if we, my husband, didn’t do that, something else would have happened.”
She asked WFAA to leave their last name out of the news coverage.
“It was self-defense. What I’m afraid of is for the guy getting out maybe through bond or something and coming back.”
