In case you missed the number, #365 completes one full year of posting. I’ll sing Happy Birthday to myself tomorrow.
These posts are based on our Good Guy with a Gun calendar. Today’s post is somewhat updated from the calendar version.
The intruder’s story was that he couldn’t stand.
That’s what he told Pharaoh Johnson, the homeowner, around midnight. Johnson’s son had complained about a commotion, and once the two of them realized somebody was in there, the son asked him to get his gun. He did.
“I asked, what are you doing in my house?” Johnson told KFOR.
The answer didn’t add up, and Johnson said as much. “He climbed onto a brick wall and cut my screen.” Maybe I’m too simple to understand, but that seems like a lot of climbing for a man who can’t stand.
The intruder had a knife, and he behaved strangely. He’d also made himself at home:
“Ate some strawberries. Left them on the floor. Grabbed a jug of apple juice and had it, drank some of that.”
He tried to take an electric scooter, too. Holding him at gunpoint, Johnson got him to leave.
He didn’t go far. A family was staying at an Airbnb in the same neighborhood, just for the weekend, and the intruder broke in through an upstairs window.
“We had went to bed,” said Mike, who asked KFOR not to use his last name. “Heard three loud thuds and a bunch of rumbling around upstairs.”
Mike’s wife saw the intruder walking through the house. He opened the door of a bedroom where the kids were sleeping.
Mike confronted him at the bottom of the stairs, and the intruder dropped to the floor. This time he stayed down, right up until police took him into custody.
“There was quite a bit of blood everywhere when he came down the stairs. So I had, you know, no idea if he’d done something to any of the kids.”
He hadn’t. Nobody was hurt, though Mike said the family was rattled. “I hope this is a once in a lifetime situation,” he said. “It could have turned a lot worse.”
The intruder was Justin Spence, a convicted burglar. He was held in the Oklahoma County Jail on two counts of first-degree burglary.
