Good Guy with a Gun #4: Central, SC
Original incident: 11/3/2023
This is the kind of content featured in the 2026 Good Guy with a Gun one-page-per-day desk calendar.
This one is just a little unusual at first, but then it has a really interesting twist.
On November 3, 2023, a homeowner in Central, South Carolina — a small town in Pickens County that’s home to Southern Wesleyan University and located near Clemson University — checked on his vacant property. When he stepped inside, he discovered a stranger lying in the bed, wrapped in a sleeping bag.
In bed in a sleeping bag? Unusual for sure, but it’s a vacant property, so not really that weird.
You can listen to the 8-minute-long 911 call at the link. It’s a funny mix of him talking to the 911 dispatcher and yelling at the trespasser, holding the man at gunpoint all the while.
To the dispatcher: I walked in the house and there’s some guy laid in the bed with a sleeping bag in my house!... I actually have a gun drawn on him just standing here.
To the trespasser: I don’t know what you got and I’m not losing my life today. You’re in my house, sir... You think it’s okay just to walk in people’s houses?... It don’t matter if it looks deserted or not, the ******* power’s on, ain’t it?
The trespasser apparently kept saying he had to go to the bathroom, because several times our GGWAG told him to wet the bed if he had to.
Here’s the twist: When the police arrived, they found out that the trespasser was Doyle Wayne Wisenhunt — the subject of an ongoing manhunt.
The 66-year-old had already been wanted on drug and weapons charges in his home state of Arkansas before ramming the Oconee Nuclear Station gate the evening before. That started a chain reaction (heh, nuclear, chain reaction… I’ll be here all year, folks) in which he tried to run down an armed guard, fled into the woods, and apparently was fired on by another GGWAG to prevent him from running onto that guy’s property. Eventually, Wisenhunt came to the vacant house and stepped inside.
Deputies arrived, arrested him, and discovered meth in his possession. Facing charges including attempted murder, he later pleaded guilty and got sentenced to ten years in jail, which was adjusted to six years behind bars plus five years probation.
This story got a lot of coverage for the nuclear power plant ramming, but very few articles mention the role of the Good Guy with a Gun holding him wrapped up in a sleeping bag for the police.
That thing that never happens, happens every day.
