Good Guy with a Gun #5: Omaha, NE

On November 4, 2023, in Omaha, Nebraska, Kaliph O’neal* dropped off his four-month-old at the baby’s mother’s house. But his ex had a new boyfriend, and that made O’neal upset.

“He had dropped the child off earlier the day,” explained Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine, “saw this car parked there in the driveway, was upset about that, came back and later that evening pounding on the front door, looking in through the windows.”

From what I’m reading, “later that evening” was actually more like 3:00 AM on November the 5th.

The man and woman inside didn’t come to the door, so O’neal threatened to break all of the windows in the man’s car.

That drew the man out. He was a concealed carry permit holder, and he had a firearm tucked into his waistband.

It’s worth noting that O’neal was a felon and legally had no right to possess a handgun. Felons being felons, he ignored that law and entered the home with his gun drawn.

“The other individual comes in to the front door with the gun out, and he’s already made all these threats. And once he enters with the gun, they pretty much both, I think, fire simultaneously almost,” Kleine said.

O’neal died at the hospital later that morning.

Kleine ruled it self-defense, noting that the man wouldn’t face charges for defending himself, the baby, and the baby’s mother. “It’s unfortunate. There’s somebody who died here, but certainly a person has the right to defend themselves, particularly when the person’s coming into the house with a gun out.”
