Good Guy with a Gun #54: Cincinnati, OH
Original incident: December 24, 2023. This is another one of those times when we know almost nothing about a defensive gun use (DGU). The Good Guy with a Gun isn’t a myth: He’s just under-documented.
This is the kind of content featured in the 2026 Good Guy with a Gun one-page-per-day desk calendar.
Early Sunday morning around 2 AM in Cincinnati’s Bond Hill neighborhood, a homeowner woke to two strangers rifling through his blue car. He grabbed his legally owned gun and confronted them outside.
Things escalated fast. Feeling that his life was in danger, he shot three or four rounds at the burglars — hitting both of them.
One of them was a juvenile. He stayed down long enough for medics to rush him, still conscious, to the hospital. His partner bolted into the night.
That’s all there is. Heck, I’m stretching just to say that much. A home was terrorized, two people were shot (one of them under 18), and all we get is the barest of thumbnail sketches of the event.
People say that the Good Guy with a Gun is a myth. In reality, he’s just under-documented.
Sources
I can only find two news articles and one 2A source that reflect this incident. It may have fallen off the news desk because of the Christmas holiday.
WXIX Fox 19 covered this incident with the level of detail I’ve given above. Their story has the feel of a police report summary.
It seems like almost nothing was known about the story when WKRC Local 12 gave 10 seconds of airtime and wrote an article about this incident. There was no indication that the shooting “victim” was actually two criminals; there was no indication of who shot whom. If not for the timing and neighborhood, we wouldn’t even know this was the same incident.
On the 2A side, Brandon Curtis at Concealed Nation covered the story based on the WXIX write-up on December 26.
That thing that never happens, happens every day.
