Good Guy with a Gun #60: Statesboro, GA
Original incident: December 21, 2023. Three people invaded a home. When they left, one had a bullet hole in him, which helped the police find him.
This is the kind of content featured in the 2026 Good Guy with a Gun one-page-per-day desk calendar.
You’d think that a place called “The Vault Apartments” would be harder to break into.
But that’s where 21-year-old Zion Cornelius masked up, and where he, his girlfriend, 20-year-old Antania Sanders, and another woman forced entry into an apartment.
It was one in the afternoon, but at least one person was home. Cornelius and the tenant struggled, but the tenant was able to fire his handgun — which, news reports highlight, was legally possessed — and strike Cornelius.
The three suspects fled the scene. By the time police arrived, they were able to “observe[] shell casings, blood, and obvious damage to an apartment,” but not the burglarizing trio.
Fortunately, Cornelius later sought treatment for his gunshot wound at a hospital in Claxton, Georgia, about a half-hour south of Statesboro. Police arrested him and his girlfriend there, charging them with Home Invasion - 1st Degree and Aggravated Assault.
Note that the gun not only forced the trio to flee, it may have been impossible to find the criminals without the wound it caused.
I can’t find follow-ups indicating that they found the other woman, nor any indication that the shooter was charged.
Sources
Most of the sources are essentially the same.
WJCL 22 has a write-up and a 37-second on-air segment.
WSAV 3, the Statesboro Herald, and WTOC 11 all printed reports.
AllOnGeorgia provided mugshots and reprinted the police report. Honestly, I think this might be the best way to go if a news source isn’t going to add any value to what the police say.
In the 2A community, Brandon Curtis at Concealed Nation gave an individual write-up, while Cam Edwards at Bearing Arms created an overview of multiple home invasions in Georgia and Connecticut. So many GGWAG stories, so little time.
That thing that never happens, happens every day.
