Good Guy with a Gun #7: Pompano Beach, FL
Original incident: November 12, 2023
This is the kind of content featured in the 2026 Good Guy with a Gun one-page-per-day desk calendar.
Just after midnight on November 12, 2023, a barefoot man veered toward a home in Pompano Beach, Broward County, Florida. Neighbor Sharon Kerrigan, outside for a smoke, saw it all.
“This guy came down the road, barefoot, looking behind him like somebody’s after him, and he veered right, went to try her doorknob, couldn’t get in that way, pulled the screen down, just started busting out the glass, and crawled through the window, and I called 911,” she said. She figured he was “whacked out on something.”
Pretty good summary, Ms. Kerrigan. Concise and colorful, with all the relevant details. Want to write for us?
Anyway, the home was occupied by a woman who lives alone, but with a gun. She shot the intruder.
Kerrigan approved: “Glad she did, older woman in this day and age, gotta have some type of protection.” (If you go to the article, you’ll be able to hear her speak, too. She’s great — I think everyone knows this woman.)
The intruder suffered non-life-threatening wounds and was arrested before being taken to the hospital.
The article at NBC6 Miami / South Florida — the only article about this shooting that I could find — goes into a little bit of detail with a former prosecutor regarding Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, which is good. Although I’m sure this woman had no issues, he pointed out that Stand Your Ground is a “very fact-specific law.” It just goes to show that every shooting is serious business.
That thing that never happens, happens every day.
