Good Guy with a Gun #23: Toledo, OH
Original Incident: November 28, 2023. There are hundreds of thousands of Defensive Gun Uses every year. Most of them don’t reach the news. This one barely made it.
This is the kind of content featured in the 2026 Good Guy with a Gun one-page-per-day desk calendar.
As with so many GGWAG incidents, we know almost nothing about what actually transpired. Here’s the little that we’ve got:
At around 1:15 AM on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, an intruder tried to break into an apartment in Toledo, Ohio. The resident fired a shot at the intruder and called 911. When the police came, they found that the round had traveled into another apartment that was, fortunately, unoccupied.
That’s it. No names, no resolution, no nothing.
For the man or woman standing in an apartment as someone tried to break in, this was a direct threat to home and well-being. It was, to paraphrase Joe “shotgun-through-the-door” Biden, a big effing deal.
But this incident barely caused a ripple on the local news, and the description of it leaves our pulses beating evenly.
The Good Guy with a Gun isn’t a myth: He’s just largely undocumented.

Just one: WTOL11, reporting from a Toledo police report. Their write-up is actually shorter than this summary, because they didn’t editorialize.
That thing that never happens, happens every day.

Think how it would have played if that bullet had hit someone in the other apartment . . .
