Think how it would have played if that bullet had hit someone in the other apartment . . .

That's a major reason to always think about what's behind the person you're shooting, of course.

By the same token, suppose the victim made sure he/she was shooting so there was a window past the intruder. That bullet comes down somewhere, too. The best thing to do is try (within the limits of adrenaline, shaking, etc.) to hit center-mass on your target.

Exactly. Split-second action doesn't allow for a lot of contemplation. But there are those who would think it should have . . .
